Youth Work Ireland Laois / Midlands LGBT+ Project: Request for Tender
MIDLANDS LGBT+ PROJECT

INVITATION TO TENDER: OVERVIEW

Midlands LGBT+ Project wishes to contract a researcher, to explore the
barriers faced and isolation felt by adult members of the LGBT+
community in Kildare, Offaly, Laois and Westmeath and furthermore how
Midlands LGBT+ Project?s services can reduce these barriers and
isolation.

This is an open invitation to tender, and all suitably qualified and
experienced researchers are invited to submit proposals.

ABOUT MIDLANDS LGBT+ PROJECT

Midlands LGBT+ Project was established in **Apply on the website** as
Laois LGBTI Project and very quickly due to demand it grew into
Midlands LGBT+ Project. The service which is a provided through Youth
Work Ireland Laois supports LGBT+ adults in the midlands. The aim of
the project is to reduce isolation felt by the LGBT+ Community in the
midlands and rural Ireland.

The services provided by the project include, social and support
groups such as coffee mornings, book clubs, sports groups, peer
support groups, parents support groups and more. It currently has
**Apply on the website** groups and approximately **Apply on the
website** service users per month. The project also provides LGBT+
workshops in schools, training for organisations and professionals,
LGBT+ events and more. It covers a geographical area of Kildare,
Offaly, Laois and Westmeath with our office based in Portlaoise.

We believe that everybody should feel safe in their homes, communities
and counties and free from discrimination or isolation based on their
gender or sexual identities and that people in the midlands should
have access to services to a high standard in relation to their gender
and sexual orientation. Midlands LGBT+ Project is committed to
providing the highest standards of support to all of our service users
and continually trying to reach harder to access members of the
community through outreach and various programmes.

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

It is well documented that members of the LGBT+ community face
significant inequalities compared to their peers. Research has shown
in Ireland, **Apply on the website**% of LGBT+ people have experienced
verbal abuse because of their gender or sexual orientation, only 1 in
3 LGBT+ people feel safe holding hands or showing affection to a
partner in public and **Apply on the website**% of LGBT+ people had
seriously considered taking their own life.

Members of the LGBT+ Community face high levels of discrimination,
mental health issues and are often very isolated. LGBT+ people in the
midlands and rural Ireland feel the above on a higher level and many
lack access to any LGBT+ services to support them.

THE PROPOSAL

Midlands LGBT+ Project wishes to commission a competent and
independent researcher to conduct a comprehensive study to explore the
impact and experiences of the LGBT+ community in Kildare, Laois,

counties for LGBT+ adults, if LGBT+ adults aware of these services and
if so are they using them and why. What are the barriers to accessing
already existing services and where are there gaps in services. It
will also look at the mental health needs of the LGBT+ community in
these counties.

This research will be a collaborative project, with Midlands LGBT+
Project management and the researchers scoping out the full parameters
